On May 1, 2017, ANA Enterprise launched a free nurse wellness program: Healthy Nurse, Healthy Nation™ (HNHN)! Its goal? Transform the health of the nation by improving the health of its registered nurses in five domains: physical activity, nutrition, rest, safety, and quality of life. With 25,000 participants and 350 partner organizations, HNHN was on its way.

Fast forward five years and wow! HNHN now has well over 300,000 participants and 600+ partner organizations. With a growing collection of nurse-centric health and safety blogs, a thriving Facebook community , a full calendar of monthly challenges, fun giveaways, a fresh new look, an engaged Advisory Committee, and a dedicated team researcher, HNHN has so much to offer coming into our 5th year. We’ve even added a new domain: mental health!

HNHN provides resources, friendly competition, individualized health risk appraisal results, and community support for nurses no matter where they are in their wellness journey. And we remain free of charge and are open to everyone.

Christine Pabico, PhD, RN, NE-BC, FAAN

Faith, gratitude, and social connection are three motivators that keep Christine Pabico aiming for a healthy lifestyle.  Connecting and bonding with others helps Christine enjoy exercising more. She prays daily with her husband and daughter.  A professional organization she belongs to, Philippine Nurses Association of Metro DC, offers nightly prayer for members to pray together. Gratitude is the last piece of the health puzzle for Christine, who says that having a grateful outlook improves her life. She loves that gratitude doesn’t require much time or effort — it’s a simple mindset that anyone can incorporate into their lifestyle.

TIPS FROM HNHN’s 2021 Find Your Balance Challenge for Better Work-Life Harmony

Talk to others and share. Speak with friends or colleagues and ask them how they achieve work-life balance. Consider making an appointment with a nurse coach or counselor to discuss strategies to use when you get overwhelmed.

Save time for reflection. Add quiet and stillness to your day to assess parts of your work and home life that fulfill or drain you. That may mean turning off music, podcasts, or tv during your commute, exercise time and prior to sleep.

Try to leave your work worries and responsibilities at work. Make home a place of rest and refuge. Try to avoid both checking work email at home and bringing work assignments home.
