On May 1, 2017, ANA Enterprise launched a free nurse wellness program: Healthy Nurse, Healthy Nation™ (HNHN)! Its goal? Transform the health of the nation by improving the health of its registered nurses in five domains: physical activity, nutrition, rest, safety, and quality of life. With 25,000 participants and 350 partner organizations, HNHN was on its way.

Fast forward five years and wow! HNHN now has well over 300,000 participants and 600+ partner organizations. With a growing collection of nurse-centric health and safety blogs, a thriving Facebook community , a full calendar of monthly challenges, fun giveaways, a fresh new look, an engaged Advisory Committee, and a dedicated team researcher, HNHN has so much to offer coming into our 5th year. We’ve even added a new domain: mental health!

HNHN provides resources, friendly competition, individualized health risk appraisal results, and community support for nurses no matter where they are in their wellness journey. And we remain free of charge and are open to everyone.

Food as medicine? Why not? With recommendations according to MyPlate | U.S. Department of Agriculture, Healthy Nurse, Healthy Nation (HNHN) is always looking to find new ways for nurses to maintain a healthy diet and healthy weight via blogs, challenges, nurse stories, great cooking videos and recipes. In addition, the Nurses Obesity Network, a group of nursing organizations committed to changing the way we view, treat, and advance care for people living with obesity. This initiative, supported by Novo Nordisk, emphasizes that achieving a healthy weight often requires a comprehensive approach in addition to diet and exercise.

Marty Malloy-McCoy, MSN, APRN, CRNA, CNP, FNP-C

After watching a documentary on the interplay between diet and health Marty Malloy-McCoy pursued a whole food, plant-based, vegan diet. He ditched meat, fish, dairy products, and processed foods, and began fueling his body with whole plant foods. Shortly after making these changes, Marty lost around 40 pounds, experienced increased energy levels, his mental health and clarity increased, he slept better, and he felt healthier than he did in high school.

“Admittedly, it can feel a little overwhelming at first to learn to cook and eat in a completely different way,” said Marty. “But after a little transition period, it just becomes second nature, and you feel so great that it becomes something you happily do.”
