On May 1, 2017, ANA Enterprise launched a free nurse wellness program: Healthy Nurse, Healthy Nation™ (HNHN)! Its goal? Transform the health of the nation by improving the health of its registered nurses in five domains: physical activity, nutrition, rest, safety, and quality of life. With 25,000 participants and 350 partner organizations, HNHN was on its way.

Fast forward five years and wow! HNHN now has well over 300,000 participants and 600+ partner organizations. With a growing collection of nurse-centric health and safety blogs, a thriving Facebook community , a full calendar of monthly challenges, fun giveaways, a fresh new look, an engaged Advisory Committee, and a dedicated team researcher, HNHN has so much to offer coming into our 5th year. We’ve even added a new domain: mental health!

HNHN provides resources, friendly competition, individualized health risk appraisal results, and community support for nurses no matter where they are in their wellness journey. And we remain free of charge and are open to everyone.

We all know that “sitting” is the new “smoking” in public health. Healthy Nurse, Healthy Nation (HNHN) recently instituted a new tag line, “Inspire. Empower. Move.” There’s no time like the present to discover new ways to incorporate physical activity into your day.

Samantha Roecker, BSN, RN, MSC

Ever since she was a young girl, Samantha Roecker has turned to running as her go-to form of exercise for both physical and mental health. Samantha tells us, “Over the years, running taught me a lot about patience, diligence, and connecting with myself.”

She ran the Boston Marathon on April 18th attempting to break the Guinness Book World Record for fastest marathon run in a nurse’s uniform AND she did! Coming in at 2 hours 48 minutes and 2 seconds, in her Moxie Scrubs, she raised more than $43,000 to support the the American Nurses Foundation — specifically for mental health and well-being resources for nurses. Go Samantha!

TIPS FROM HNHN’s 2021 Step Up & Reconnect Challenge, powered by Humana

Explore nature with a hike or walk. As the weather gets warmer, find a new hiking trail or places to go for walks. Not sure how to find a good trail? Use the All Trails search tool.

Plant something. Head outside and tidy up the landscaping with some weeding, raking, and laying fresh mulch, then make a trip to your local greenhouse for some fresh flowers, herbs, shrubs, or trees. If you don’t have a yard, buy some small plants, like succulents, that you can grow and maintain indoors.

Add intervals to your walking or jogging routine. For example, if you normally only walk, add 30 seconds of jogging every couple of minutes; if you normally jog, add 30 seconds of sprinting every few minutes. Not only will this interval training get your heart pumping, but it’ll also increase your steps and burn more calories.
