Nurses Month Week 1 Day 7

ANA Enterprise - Nurses Month 2022 / Nurses Month Week 1 Day 7
Nurses Month Week 1. Self-Care

On May 1, 2017, ANA Enterprise launched a free nurse wellness program: Healthy Nurse, Healthy Nation™ (HNHN)! Its goal? Transform the health of the nation by improving the health of its registered nurses in five domains: physical activity, nutrition, rest, safety, and quality of life. With 25,000 participants and 350 partner organizations, HNHN was on its way.

Fast forward five years and wow! HNHN now has well over 300,000 participants and 600+ partner organizations. With a growing collection of nurse-centric health and safety blogs, a thriving Facebook community , a full calendar of monthly challenges, fun giveaways, a fresh new look, an engaged Advisory Committee, and a dedicated team researcher, HNHN has so much to offer coming into our 5th year. We’ve even added a new domain: mental health!

HNHN provides resources, friendly competition, individualized health risk appraisal results, and community support for nurses no matter where they are in their wellness journey. And we remain free of charge and are open to everyone.

Come celebrate with us this “Self-Care” week, sponsored by Moxie Scrubs, with inspirational #healthynurse Spotlights, popular past challenge tips, and energizing calls to action each day. Don’t miss our #healthynurse Coffee Break, powered by CeraVe, in celebration of Nurses Month and five years of HNHN. Attendees will receive a free gift.

If you haven’t already, join the fun at hnhn.org!

Safety Saturday

On this last day of Self-Care Week, Healthy Nurse, Healthy Nation (HNHN) is reminding you to be SAFE.  HNHN recommends familiarizing yourself with your organization’s occupational health and safety policies.

A great way to discover current safety policy is to ask a nurse leader at your workplace about your employer’s workplace violence, incivility, and bullying prevention practices. Ask about procedures, forms, and incidences. ANA’s #EndNurseAbuse website has resource guides, podcasts, and more to assist with this issue.

#healthynurse SPOTLIGHT

Sarah Abel, DNP, RN, CEN, FAEN

When the pandemic caused her position at work to go remote, Sarah Abel realized her role as a nurse and a yoga instructor could help people in a different way.

“I feel like becoming a yoga instructor is another way I can fulfill my vision and mission for my life,” said Sarah. “Being a servant leader and not serving on the frontlines through COVID, I realized there were other things I could do to serve my community and the mental and physical struggles they faced during the pandemic.”

Visit our past #healthynurse Spotlights through the years. Each spotlight shares an intimate look at a nurse’s or student nurse’s journey and helpful wellness pointers.

TIPS FROM HNHN’s 2022 #EndNurseAbouse Challenge

As a nurse, you’re always focused on your patients, but you also need to protect yourself. Being aware of your surroundings at all times can help protect against possible violence.

Ask for help if you feel uncomfortable around a patient or visitors. Request an escort to your car if parked in an unlit or unsafe area. Have access to a panic button or a way to call for help in the event of an emergency.

Assess your surroundings for items that can be used as a weapon against you. Avoid facing your back to patients and visitors. Stay away from isolated, dark areas.

Know your exits. When necessary and possible, position yourself near a doorway, in case you need to make a quick exit, and avoid facing your back to patients and visitors. Be aware of all emergency exits in all the areas where you work.

Closing out Self-Care Week, HNHN wants to thank and recognize all nurses for the wonderful care you’ve provided throughout your career.

We hope you enjoyed and made use of HNHN’s self-care resources throughout Nurses Month week of self-care. Please take care of yourselves! You are critical to the nation’s health.
